The Red Box, Velachery

Recently on one of my drives from Velachery to Taramani, spotted this bright red place called The Red Box, serving Chinese food. I added it to my bucket list, but didn’t quite expect I’d get an opportunity to try it so soon. Its a either home-delivery or takeaway only, and no dine-in!

Ordered online on Zomato. The first three combos prominently displayed were
– Chicken Fried Rice and Schezwan Chicken Combo
– Chicken Schezwan Fried Rice and Chilli Chicken Combo
– Chicken Chilli Garlic Noodles and Kung Pao Chicken Combo
Since the three combos seemed distinctly different, decided to try all the three. Also being a chicken lover, I looked no further in the menu, just placed the order right away !
Delivery was prompt, no issues with that! It reached well before the mentioned time.
The packing was kinda cute. Neatly packed red boxes, no spillage. Each box included both the mains and sides(gravy) in it. Each of the boxes had the gravy separately packed in a tightly-closed plastic box in it. Quickly clicked some pictures and started to eat.
First thing that was glaringly obvious was that all the gravies looked the same! Either they were all one and the same, wrongly packed, or the differences too subtle to notice. Either way, it wasn’t helping one bit. I definitely think it should be easily possible to differentiate between Schezwan Chicken, Chilli Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken, which wasn’t the case here. I wasn’t able to make out which of these three, it actually was! It seemed more like a ‘generic’ gravy with chicken pieces, which could impersonate any of these. Ignored the mix-up and started to eat. Chicken Schezwan Fried Rice was good, Chicken Chilli Garlic Noodles was tasty, and the flavour of garlic was awesome. Chicken Fried Rice was definitely salty, and if I was dining in the restaurant, I’d have sent it back, for sure. It was even more obvious when the fried rice cooled down a bit.
A mix-up of the correct gravies and the salty Chicken Fried Rice didn’t quite leave a very pleasant feeling to the whole meal. I’ll not be too keen to order from them again immediately, but then, I’ll possibly give them another chance, sometime in the future!
Paid a little less than 500 bucks, the experience was a mixed bag!
