Kozhi Idli

It has been quite a while since I wrote a post on my blog. It was actually to cut down the frequency of my eating out. Somehow I realized that I have still been eating out quite often, but just not blogging about it. 😉

Myself and a friend were coming back home from R A Puram and we were terribly hungry as we hadn’t eaten anything after a coffee in the evening. We decided to have dinner and I really couldn’t recollect any place immediately. As we passed through Adayar/GandhiNagar, somehow two names came up in my mind – Crimson Chakra and Kozhi Idli. There’s no comparison between the two places except that they are in a common area. Since we did not want an elaborate dinner, we decided to visit Kozhi Idli instead.
I have heard about this place long ago but never had a chance to visit this till now. The directions on Zomato were pin-point accurate, did not have any difficulty in locating the place. As we entered, it was a nice small place with essentially ‘stand-and-eat’ option. Of course there were some chairs and you could sit too.  Idli is not something new in most of our homes  🙂  All of us would have grown up eating this – Chutney, Sambhar and Molaga Podi as accompaniments in vegetarian households and Chicken or Mutton Kozhambu in non-vegetarian households.  What was so attractive about the place was the concept ‘Keep it Simple’! A plate of 3 Idlis and Kozhi Kozhambu (Chicken Gravy) is their basic offering, though their menu has more items than just this one. We decided to stand and eat and try out a couple of dishes so I actually have something to write about. 😉
We were told that the kozhi khozhambu comes in two flavors – one with red chilly and one with pepper. We opted for one each and decided to share. I’ve had vadacurry at quite a few places and the kozhi vadacurry got me curious, ordered one of that. We wanted a dry chicken dish and were recommended Boneless Chicken Fry, ordered one!
The idlis were hot and very soft! Absolutely loved them. The two gravies were distinctly different in flavors and were tasty and the portion size was easily enough for 5 Idlis. We had two more idlis each. Vadacurry was good, I would have liked it a bit more spicy. The Garlic chutney was worth a mention, a clear winner ! The boneless chicken fry was tasty and good, but was a complete mismatch of expectation. I was expecting something more South-Indian, and not the McD, KFC types with tomato ketchup! Anyway, it tasted very good too !
Overall, the food was awesome! As I said earlier, the seating is not very comfy, so don’t choose this place for an elaborate dinner. If you want to have a quick nice South-Indian Non-vegetarian food, so to say, Idli and kozhi kozhambu, this is the place to head to !
The bill was around 450 bucks including a bottle of water and was well worth it. This place may not appeal to Vegetarian folks as eating veg food in a non-veg place is never the same as having it in a ‘pure’ vegetarian restaurant. 🙂
