One of the fellow foodies in a Facebook food group recommended this place after I posted a review of Madras Takkar for Hyderabadi Biryani. Since then I have been waiting to visit Nammaa Kitchen, on the Velachery-Taramani Main Road. Today, myself and wifey had an opportunity to check this out.
As soon as we entered, we saw that the place was neat, brightly lit, and the AC was welcoming! Frankly I didn’t quite expect it to be so nice, don’t know why! Quite a few of the tables were occupied at that time. We sat down in one of the four-seater tables on the ground floor. Only after some guests were directed to the first floor, I realized that they were spread across two floors, good to handle crowd during peak hours! Despite many thoughts around it, I couldn’t quite make out why they had an extra ‘A’ in their name. Looked like their Tamil name was corrected, but English still was spelt wrongly, if at all they meant it to be ‘Namma Kitchen’ as in ‘Our Kitchen’.
We were served a complimentary shot of lemon juice, which was okayish, not great.
We Ordered one Special Chicken 65 Biryani made in Hyderabadi style, 1 Roti, 1 Butter Naan and a Tawa Chicken (recommended by the waiter). Meanwhile cute Goli Soda bottles grabbed our attention, so ordered two of them, Orange and Purple Haze/Grape.
Service was a bit sluggish to start with, not quite sure who did what! It got better as time progressed. Took a while and a couple of reminders for them to get the soda. Finally, it came and it was fun opening it oursleves. Not quite as difficult as the ones I have seen in soda shops. This just needed a light press. Orange was good, and Grape was more like Bovonto and soda. I liked Orange better. 70 bucks for each is definitely pricey! Saw the price after I ordered it, didn’t want to cancel!
Breads and Tawa Chicken arrived first. It looked inviting, and on eating the first mouthful, it tasted as good, totally loved it! Nice flavor, soft chicken pieces, punch from the green chillies, a bit spicy, it was a very nice accompaniment to the Roti and Butter Naan.
While we were almost done with this, Biryani made an entry! Looks-wise, it resembled Hyderabadi Biryani, and on probing further, Chicken 65 and masala was neatly tucked inside the rice. It was accompanied with Raita and Saalan. Biryani tasted good too, and again, this is in no way close to the Biryanis of Chennai, so please keep a check on your expectations. This was a very decent Hyderabadi Biryani I would say.
Initialy we were planning to share a dessert, but in the end quite stuffed, decided to give it a miss! Paid 730 bucks in all, and it was a wonderful lunch.
Service needs to be stepped up, and perhaps training is the need of the hour.
