Velu Family Restaurant, Nungambakkam

A pretty mediocre experience at Velu Family Restaurant on Valluvar Kottam High Road. Earlier, it used to be known as Velu Military Hotel, and used to be quite popular amoung our friends’ circles. Since it has been a while, a friend and I decided to try!

We decided to sit in the AC section, as it was quite hot outside. We were quite clear on what we wanted – 1 Egg Kothu Parotta, 2 Parottas each meanwhile, a Kalakki and an Omelette. These type of restaurants have a huge tray with all ‘special’ dishes in it. Its like the ‘real-time’ menu, you can decide after looking at the appearance and quantity of the dishes. My friend ordered a Brain Fry and I ordered a Chicken Sukka.
Parottas were good, and the red gravy alongside looked inviting. I shredded the parottas, something I’m used to doing since school days, and generously poured the gravy on it. First mouth, and all I could taste was a tomato-based gravy! It was a disappointment to say the least. Asked him if some other gravy was available, and then he served the chicken and naattukozhi gravy. Wish he had given it earlier. I had to let go of the parottas since I really didn’t like that gravy. It made no impression to the otherwise Parotta-Salna lovers. Egg Kothu Parotta was decent, liked it with the Naattukozhi Gravy. Meanwhile Brain Fry and chicken Sukka was served. It looked like chicken was shredded off a leg piece and then made into a sukka, the masala absolutely not getting anywhere into the chicken. Friend was okay with the brain fry, nothing worth raving about. We felt both these ‘special’ dishes weren’t something that would tickle our tastebuds. By now, we were looking to finish the meal, Kalakki and Omelette were the saving grace. We ended the pretty average meal with a couple of soft drinks.
Pricing was pretty decent, nothing worth complaining, around 700 bucks for the two of us, but food left a lot to be desired. It certainly wasn’t anywhere near the Velu Military Hotel that we remembered in early 2000s.
I don’t think I’ll take all the effort to get to that side of the city to visit this place.
