Thanjavur Mess in West Mambalam is one of the very old joints that serves good vegetarian food. Tired of the usual places in Velachery, a friend and I decided to have breakfast here!
I was told that the place opens by 7AM, so we were quite late by that standard. It was almost 09:30 AM by the time we reached the place. Its in one of the narrow lanes called Subbareddy Street, so you’re better off with a two wheeler than a four wheeler.
I started with a Pongal and 2 Medhu vadais, while my friend opted for a Dosai (they called it ‘Maavu’) and 1 Vadai. Subsequently I ordered a Poori Masala and my friend had another Dosai. We washed it down with a Filter Coffee each.
Pongal was hot and super yummy with the Getti Chutney and the Arachchuvitta Sambhar, very flavorsome! Medhu vadais were not piping hot, but tasted good. Friend liked his Dosai too. They should seriously consider reducing the size of the ladles used to serve chutney and sambhar. They didn’t quite understand what ‘little’ meant. It was two huge servings, twice!
Poori Masala was very tasty too, loved it. The kaara chutney was a nice accompaniment to both Pongal and Poori.
Filter Coffee was okay taste-wise, but a bit watery. I am used to it, so liked it.
Overall, a satisfying breakfast and we paid 175 bucks in all. Just now checking the bill, 2 Dosais were not included, Pooris were billed as 2, though we had 1. A bit confused here, we should have checked the bill earlier! I think we paid less than what we had, it wasn’t intentional though !
I have heard many mixed opinions about their lunch, will try that sometime! I would certainly come back for their breakfast.
They serve the wonderful Kumbakonam Kadappa only on Sundays I think, so did not have a chance to taste that today, that’s for the next time !
The place is a ‘mess’, so the general outlook and hygiene will not be at par with high class veg restaurants, however the dining place was clean, I had no complaints ! Please keep your expectations in check !
