Chennai Restaurant Reviews

Visesham, Nandanam, Chennai

Visesham, means ‘special’, and sure it was!  The newly opened restaurant on Chamiers Road – Visesham, truly did justice to its name. I am glad I chose this place for an occasion very special too – My wedding Anniversary!

The place is located right next to Sashwatha Café on Chamiers Road. The restaurant’s luxurious décor and ambience screams elegance and class making it a truly posh dining experience. We were one of the very early diners, and as evening progressed, the place was almost full.  Quickly clicked some pics while the place was still empty.

We settled down, quickly looked at the menu and it was very obvious that the place served a mix of cuisines from the Four South-Indian states. The plates were set, the complimentary rice crisps and non-vegetarian pickles made their way to the table.  The brass cutlery felt quite special!

Soup

We ordered Naattukozhi Rasam, one by two. Just fantastic!  A very flavorsome broth, rightly spiced, served at the right temperature, not a slightest odour from the chicken in the soup which is a put-off for me in most places. Overall, just wonderful!

Starters

Firstly, meat and seafood were super fresh. Heard the same comments for Prawns and fish too. Surprisingly not a single chewy chicken piece in both the starters.  Soft, well-cooked, masala getting into it, it was very well done.  Everything we ate was a burst of flavors. The spice levels in Chicken starters seemed a bit toned down, while I was told the chammanthi-like masala around the prawns was quite spicy. Meen polichathu was very tasty, family said. Overall fantastic starters.

Kori Green Roast

Malabar Jumbo Prawn Ularthiyathu

Ayirampalli Polichathu

Kobbarikaya Kodi Iguru

We decided to try some of their drinks, the pics on the menu were very catchy! Ordered Malar Thuli and Karumbu. Both were good.

Main Course

Visesham Chicken Biryani could have been better.  Given the dish had the name of the restaurant implying it as a signature dish, it should have definitely felt more special, it didn’t.  Nothing bad about it at all, but felt like it needed a more-experienced hand to get the texture, the fragrance from the meat-cooked rice, and the long-grain Basmati rice right!😊

Malabar Parotta with Naadan Kozhi Curry was the showstopper of the meal!  The gravy was a bit runny than it should have been, but didn’t mind it. It only helped soak the parottas better.  Finger-licking good!  A typical Malabar Parotta is bigger than the normal ones almost everywhere.  Here it wasn’t, so we had to repeat it.  Freshly made, very nice too!

Couple of more drinks before the desserts – Panakam and Pazharasam!  Panakam has this strange flavor of Vibuthi which certainly needs to be toned down.  The typical punch from dried ginger was missing, overall, good but not the Panakam I know.  We repeated Karumbu.

Desserts

Burnt Badam Halwa, we liked it.  There was more to the halwa than just Badam, couldn’t exactly quite make out what.

Elaneer Payasam, daughter’s favorite. Tasty!

There was an artist playing Veena live, very soothing, and with Maestro Ilayaraja’s songs in the backdrop, the dinner can only get better!

Finally, time to do the honors! 🙂 Paid 7.8K in all, about 2K per person which is justifiable for a fine-dine restaurant.  As I said, it is a pricey place and I’d reserve it for special occasions. Very courteous service by Mr. Santosh all through the evening! Certainly elevated our dining experience.

I had a chance to say a hello and have a pleasant conversation with Mr. Arasu Dennis, the man behind this brand. Overall, Anniversary dinner, well done!  Certainly would recommend this place for a wonderful fine-dining experience!
