Never have I had so much dilemma in choosing what to eat. Standing in front of these two shops, right next to each other in East Tambaram, whether it was Parotta or Biryani for lunch was the question. Love for Parotta won, and we decided to eat at M. K. N. Madurai Idly Kadai.
My love for Parottas dates back to school days in Trichy, and for my foodie friend, who was also my classmate in school, it continued further for a few more years, during his college days in Madurai. We’re no strangers to shops with basic or no ambience. This is a very small shop which hardly seats 10-12 people at a time. Settled well in one of the tables meant for four, but hardly enough for both of us 😉
Bun Parotta was the obvious choice, we were served 3 each. They were just warm as they were made a while ago, and not directly from the tawa. Quite understandable, as afternoons are not the busiest times for Parottas. Evenings would be a lot busier and you have a greater chance to get hot parottas, directly from the tawa. Immediately did the formalities, read as shredded it into small bits (coloquially, pichchi-poattufied) and waited for the gravy. The special gravy was served on the side. The other ‘generic’ gravy on the table was there for us to take as much as we needed. We also got a Boti gravy and ordered an Egg Gravy in addition to it. Poured generous amounts of gravy on the Parotta and started to dig in. It was very tasty.
The special gravy had loads on ginger and was very yummy! Egg gravy that we ordered was tasty, but the ‘free’ gravy on the table seemed to be better than that. Parottas were soft and we ordered a few more. Ordered Boti-Egg Fry and a Saerva potta Kalakki. Both of them were wonderful! Boti-Egg-Fry was more like podimas/burji with Boti, and I have taken a liking to Kalakki in recent times. With this, we finished a very nice lunch!
Service couldn’t be better, talking about Madurai and Trichy days, the person who waited on our table was pleased to hear all that. He proudly declared he was from Thekkuvaasal in Madurai. He mentioned to us that we should visit in the evenings when Mutton Sukka, Chops, Chicken Sukka, Idly are available. We did assure him that we will be back soon!
Paid 233 bucks in all, for a wonderful lunch !
